Saint Joseph Central High School vs Staley High School
4 5

Central took its talents south to take on the Falcons of Staley. As the Tribe arrived, the quickly realized that they lived in Tornado Alley, and that the Wind would be a major factor on the match.

While other schools cancelled matches due to the severity of the wind, Central pressed on to take on the Falcons. Central started very slow in singles losing the first set in all but one match. The team has developed a stronger sense of mental toughness and it would be demonstrated in the second set. At 4, 5, and 6 the Indians battled back and forced third set tiebreakers. #4 Joe Robb, went on to beat his opponent 10-5 in the third set tiebreak. #5 Luke Ensign demonstrated his will to win, by winning 10-6 in his tiebreaker after losing the first set 0-6, an incredible comeback. #6 Nic Steele fought off 3 match points and mentally broke down his opponent in a second and third set tiebreaker. It was incredible with the whole team supporting him He definitely earned the nickname “Man of Steele.”

The Indians have truly embraced, cheering on teammates and if you make it out to a match you will not be bored, because the enthusiasm of this team has become contagious, and though it was a tough loss 4-5, the team is growing and building on the positives.

This was no more evident than in Matt Davis and Joseph Bui’s doubles match. Taking on the #1 doubles team of Staley, the pair went down 6-3. Then the entire team left Steele’s incredible victory and gave full support to the doubles team. Standing in the 40 mph wind, the team demonstrated enthusiasm and provided and electric feel to the match. Bui and Davis used this to raise their game and fought all the way back. This culminated in an 8-6 victory at #1 doubles, which was well earned.

It’s exciting to see where this team is headed as the continue to improve match to match. There is work to be done, but they are ready to put in the time. Let’s Go Central!!!
